Hi. Have you tried a tens machine, if not do as they are very good for sciatic pain.

If you have a slipped disc and this is why you need surgery, it wont go away. The disc will be compressing on your spinal nerve causing the pain in your bottom and down your leg/s.

I have looked after loads of young ones after having disc surgery, and after the recovery period (3-6 months) you will back to your normal self.

My advice? Dont suffer.
References :
If you are looking to work, while you are avoiding the surgery there are chairs that are designed to address sciatica.

Take a look BodyBilt chairs, www.ergo4me.com, and read up on what they have for sciatica. I know they address sciatica because of a co-worker has one of their chairs and suffered from extreme sciatic pain (heavy, heavy reliance on pain meds) now she works longer hours then I do.
References :
co-worker

....as long as you have explored all avenues of non-invasive treatment (physio/chiro), had a good rehab program for at least 6 weeks and then if no better had an epidural and still then no better.....then it looks as if surgery is the right way forward. don't be pushed into it, get a few opinions, but back surgery does work. especially for failed conservative treatment. i've looked after loads of people your age and they all get back to their old lifestyle. if you leave it too long, then it may start to become detrimental to your future health.....
References :
I had surgery becuz of sciatica. It was successful. It was one of the best things Ive ever done. If youre not ready, lay on ice. Ice is the best thing for you right now. Its decrease swelling and may help. Dont be lifting anything, itll only worsen your problem. Exercises you can do are......laying on your back, flatten your spine to the floor and pull your legs into your chest. Do a few of these like 3 times a day. Another exercise you can do is.....lay on your stomach and put your hands on the floor like youre gonna do a pushup.....push your upper body up, with the rest of your body flat to the floor. This helps realign things in your spine. Do a few of these 3 times a day also.

Keep doing these things everyday, if the sciatica continues, you are gonna have to have surgery. Youll be glad you did. But research the doctor.

Also, a chiropractor may be able to help you alot, I was always against them till recently. They CAN help.
References :
don't use heat, it will inflame an already inflamed area (sciatica is an inflamed nerve).
use ice 15-20 min 3-4 times a day.
chiropractic is great-- especiallly if you can find someone who does flexion-distraction technique.
good luck.
References :
Doctors are always ready to cut!
Try a chyropractor, first try adjustments. You might get some relief by using a good vibrator. It will heat the area, and could cure the problem. Don't over do it
