How does a car headrest help to guard against whiplash in a rear-end collision?

In term of Newton’s first law (the law of inertia), how does a car headrest help to guard against Whiplash in a rear-end collision?

First law
There exists a set of inertial reference frames relative to which all particles with no net force acting on them will move without change in their velocity. This law is often simplified as "A body persists its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force." Newton’s first law is often referred to as the law of inertia.

Your body is shoved forward when you are hit from behind while in your car. Since your head is not touching the back of the seat it won’t be pushed forward as fast and tends to keep traveling at the old rate of speed so it looks like it is going backwards. Really, it just isn’t going forwards as fast as the rest of your body is. The headrest keeps your head from going back any further than the headrest, hyper-extending your neck. So the headrest starts pushing your head forward at the same speed as your body, keeping them aligned.

Is it common to have neck and shoulder pain one day after a massage?

I had a massage yesterday thinking it would help the pain I have been having in my shoulders and neck. There are knots in my neck and shoulder blades. The massage felt great a little sore while she was working, but once I was done I felt amazing. Today my neck and shoulders hurt like they did before the massage. Should I consult a doctor? Is there home remedies? What should I do?

first of all, i am a massage therapist and the pain you describe is common for someone who hasn’t had a massage before or hasn’t had one for a long time. sometimes, bruising as well can occur if the body is not accustomed to it. it is like exercising intensely if you haven’t done that for awhile, too and feeling the pain the day after as well. so, in the mean time, you must take it easy (this is what you should have done for a few hours after the massage) , drink lots of liquids. no sodas and junkfood and allow your body to capture the effects of massage in a day to three days. if it still hurts, see a doctor or chiropractor. i would see a chiropractor first as your pain could possibly stem from spinal misalignment besides from musculature pain…

What is the best neck cushion for pain relief?

I strained my neck in a car accident and the hospital-grade therapy pillows aren’t giving me enough support so my neck ends up cramped if I’m sitting upright for more than an hour. I’d like to get a neck cushion that I can wear to support my head and keep my pain down, any suggestions?

I would reccomend a u shaped pillow for you if you are going to be sitting upright for more than one hour. These neck pillows are often known as "travel pillows"- because they are great for while you are on an airplane.

How can I treat frequent headaches and neck pain?

I’ve been getting frequent headaches and sore neck for several years now. And, yes, I have gone to the doctor. I’ve had x rays of my necks and it’s all fine. I have a medical history. 12 years ago, when I was 8 years old, I had a brain tumour. It was removed in 1994. I’ve had MRI every year and nothing’s coming back. However, since then I’ve been getting headaches. Now, these last few years I’ve also been getting sore necks. Please advise me on how to treat these headaches and neck pains.

Thank you.
The doctor tells me to get lots of rest. But it still occurs nearly everyday.

Before let me to tell you I’m sharing your same discomfort with headache.
You should really go to your doctor and stress out that your problem is loweing your life quality as I seem from your words. He has to prescribe you a drug for the pain relief.
I don’t know what kind of headache you are suffering of but as I know if you suffer of migraine you can discuss with your doctor about the opportunity to take Triptans, such as sumatriptan, zolmitriptan (these drugs help to prevent migraine attacks). During acute attacks you can take a drug that belongs to NSAID like ibuprofen.

Meanwhile there are simple steps you can take to prevent headache.

Dont’ miss a meal, don’t drink much coffee and alcool, don’t eat much of preserved meats and foods containing monosodium glutamate (low fat and no fat milk products often include milk solids that contain MSG as drinks, candy, and chewing gum)

Moreover it’s important to stay away from stress and to sleep enough. Important is also to keep a correct posture especially for neck pain and to do regular exercises

Regardin both headache and neck pain, you can try massage too; someone gets benefit from this

Hope this help
