Is it common to have neck and shoulder pain one day after a massage?

I had a massage yesterday thinking it would help the pain I have been having in my shoulders and neck. There are knots in my neck and shoulder blades. The massage felt great a little sore while she was working, but once I was done I felt amazing. Today my neck and shoulders hurt like they did before the massage. Should I consult a doctor? Is there home remedies? What should I do?

first of all, i am a massage therapist and the pain you describe is common for someone who hasn’t had a massage before or hasn’t had one for a long time. sometimes, bruising as well can occur if the body is not accustomed to it. it is like exercising intensely if you haven’t done that for awhile, too and feeling the pain the day after as well. so, in the mean time, you must take it easy (this is what you should have done for a few hours after the massage) , drink lots of liquids. no sodas and junkfood and allow your body to capture the effects of massage in a day to three days. if it still hurts, see a doctor or chiropractor. i would see a chiropractor first as your pain could possibly stem from spinal misalignment besides from musculature pain…

would anyone have information about shoulder/neck pain? I am hurting in my neck and the pain is radanting down?

my neck to my shoulder.I am having problems lifting my arm in a gravity plane, due to the heaviest of my arm.the pain feels deep and throbbing and never eases off.Heat does not help it! I am having symptom’s of weakness with tingling sensation.

It sounds like a stenosis in the cervical disc area (neck) of the spine. It could mean a slipped disc also. The only real way to tell is an MRI.
You may have to have surgery if this is bad, consider going to a neurologist as soon as possible.

Can anyone suggest what helps constant stress related neck & shoulder pain?

I am a 38 year old mom of three – ages 11, 7, and 2. My husband is also a trucker who’s gone alot leaving me to deal with ALL that goes on around here by myself! Some days are better than others – but by the end of the day my neck and shoulders hurt so bad I can barely stand it! I can feel the knots and sometimes getting rubbed (when he’s home) helps but it’s never very often that I get rubbed. My MD prescribed at my request Valium 5mg 2X’s daily – but I’m finding myself taking more than that now! I have been taking 3-4 pills sometimes all at once (up to 20mg total) and can barely feel the relief anymore like I did the first month I started on them? I’m not addicted cause I don’t need them every day – just need something REAL strong to help out when I DO need something. NO HEALTH INSURANCE doesn’t help so I need affordable meds like the valium – they’re cheap. I have a real high tolerance for pain meds – I know my body & I’m NOT a druggie – any suggestions for new meds?

A good professional massage would definitely help relax your shoulders and muscles and help you feel better. If you can afford to do this I would recommend you get one.

the best medication to remove anxiety and stress is Xanax. Ask your doctor if you can have a prescription of this.

Chamomile Tea Is excellent for calming down stress. Drink this throughout the day.
